Corner swag and bow border detail
Pieced Star of Bethlehem quilt (87 ½" x 84 ½") with swag border in greens, yellows, and reds on cream ground. Quilt top is cotton. Fabric patterns are printed floral, plaid, and solids. Diamonds make up overall pattern star, pieced stars in corner blocks are appliquéd, swag border is appliquéd. Corner blocks are 20". One border (8") carries the swag motif with bows in the corners.
Muslin in four pieces.
Hand-quilted @ 10 stitches per inch. Inconsistent quilting (multiple makers?). Heavy quantity (except in star). Generally fine in quality. Quilt patterns: filler quilting, floral, grid, feathers.
Edges are straight, corners square. Self bound, backing brought to front.
Moderate damage: dye fading, stains.
SC states that this was one of her mother's favorites and that it came from Maryland. SC states: "judging from the festooned border, which was very popular in the 1840s, and the calicoes used, I say it was made about that time."
