Search For:

You may search for individual people, businesses or locations.

Keep in mind that a search for "apple" & Surname may yeild all names that contain that string of letters (Applegate, Applewaite, etc). "Light" & Business will find people working at Cape Foulweather lighthouse as well as retail lighting stores.

Use

Information was entered in almost a dozen fields. The searchable fields - personal surname, company name, business type, year, or location - are based on the most frequent requests. Once you have made the initial search, clicking on an element will display all recorded information.

Sources

The data base was transcribed from parts of business directories, photocopies of which are in the BCHM collection.

Lincoln County was created in 1893. Prior directories list locations that were, at that time, part of Benton County. For example, light tenders from Cape Foulweather, and businesses from Elk City, Siletz, and Newport are listed in the 1873 and 1874 Benton County directories.

Generally speaking, these are pages for Corvallis, Monroe, and Philomath. Because a copy of classified pages for Benton and Linn counties in 1913 is among these pages, Alsea, Bellfountain, Blodgett, Kings Valley, Summit, Wells, and Wren show up for this year. Since these classified pages have street addresses, all were added to 1913-1914 city listings in square brackets, rather than duplicating entries.

Editing

Abbreviations of company name, type of business, and title have been spelled out. Abbreviated forenames have been spelled out; periods (full stops) have been added to initials.

Where a business name (almost always a governmental entity) or a business type was obvious and not indicated, information has been supplied in square brackets.

Where a listing could appear in more than one location in the alphabet, its position is recorded in the Notes field.

An occasional editorial [sic] has been used to indicate that a name is entered as found, even though variants exist in other years. An egregious example of this is Baesen, Balsen, Basen, and Beasen!

Display ads have been transcribed when they are available.
